Welcome to the official website of the University of Nevada, Reno Band Department! The year 2008-09 is going to be action packed and hope that you will visit us frequently, watching and listening to the video and audio recordings of the various groups in the Band Department. Please enjoy your visit! Organizations in the Band Department include the Wolf Pack Marching Band (The Pride of the Sierra), Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Campus Band, Reno Wind Symphony and three Pep Bands. This year the Marching Band consists of 135 student musicians. Members represent a total of 47 Nevada high schools in 17 counties, as well as high schools in 11 other states and three foreign countries. More than 40% of the members are declared music majors, while the other students actively pursue fields of study ranging from Accounting to Zoology.
The band rehearses six hours each week in preparation for our half time and pre game presentations. Band members put in countless hours individually as they prepare music and drills for each show. In addition, three Pep Bands provide musical entertainment at indoor athletic events.
Our nationally recognized University of Nevada Wind Ensemble, comprised of 60 of the most select instrumentalists in the Department of Music and Dance , meets during the Fall and Spring semesters. This organization records new band literature for TRN Music Publisher and Wingert-Jones Music Company.
The Symphonic Band, an ensemble of approximately 50 musicians, performs contemporary and traditional band literature and meets during the Spring semester. Membership in this band is by audition only. The Campus Band is comprised of students from all over campus, student musicians from the Marching Band, as well as Music Education majors playing secondary instruments. Auditions for these ensembles are held at the conclusion of the Fall semester.
The Reno Wind Symphony is an adult community band of 60 musicians. I am proud to say that I organized the RWS in January of 2006. The membership includes 23 area music educators in Northern Nevada. Two-thirds of the members in the group are alumni of the University of Nevada Band Department.
Please contact the Band Office for further information regarding any of our ensembles.
